Steel vs. Wood Privacy Fences: Which Is Right for Your DFW Property?

Most homeowners shopping for a privacy fence start by thinking about wood. Steel is another option for people who value full screening, consistent finish, and less routine upkeep. Here is what to compare before choosing a material—not just the advertised price per linear foot.

What Is Different About the Two Fence Types?

Initial Cost

A conventional wood privacy fence often has a lower upfront installed price. DFW Steel Privacy supplies and installs a coordinated, six-foot steel system. It should be compared as a different product, not as the least-expensive way to close off a yard.

Routine Maintenance

Wood can require periodic staining or sealing, repairs, and eventual replacement of weathered boards. Our finished steel panels do not need a wood-staining cycle. Steel still needs occasional cleaning and inspection, particularly after damage or exposure to harsh conditions.

Design and Privacy

Wood offers many styles, finishes, and custom construction options. Our steel fence has a defined six-foot height, coordinated colors and matching components. The solid panels provide visual privacy without the usual gaps between individual wood pickets.

Real Pricing, Not a Generic Average

Compare the Whole Installed Project

A quoted price for a wood fence can vary with wood species, board thickness, post type, construction method, finish, and installation conditions. To make a fair comparison, request a wood quote that specifies its materials, gates, demolition, and finish work.

For our six-foot steel privacy fence, the published installed fence rate depends on the length of your project. Standard gates are priced separately; existing-fence removal, slopes, restricted access, and estimated sales tax can change the final total. The lowest per-foot tier is for projects over 200 linear feet—not every project.

We do not sell or install wood privacy fencing. If wood is your preferred material, use a local wood-fence contractor's written quote to compare against our steel estimate.

Long-Term Ownership

Which Costs Matter After Installation?

Maintenance Time and Materials

Consider cleaning, staining or sealing, individual board repairs, and contractor labor over the years you expect to own the property. The amount varies considerably with the wood, sun exposure, weather, and care you choose.

Damage and Repairs

Neither fence material is immune to windborne debris, impacts, ground movement, or improper installation. Ask what happens if a panel, post, or gate is damaged and how replacement components can be obtained.

Warranty Terms

Our steel system is promoted with 25-year warranty coverage, subject to the manufacturer's terms and exclusions. A manufacturer's finish or material warranty is not the same as unlimited coverage for installation, impact damage, or site conditions.

Know the Constraints

When Might Wood Be the Better Fit?

Wood may be the sensible choice when the lowest initial investment, a custom height, a distinctive traditional appearance, or a particular HOA-approved material is your deciding factor. Steel may be a better fit when you prioritize a coordinated finish, long-term upkeep, and full privacy over the lowest upfront cost.

Material restrictions are location-specific. Some Dallas properties have especially important fence-material rules. We check a property's local requirements, HOA rules, and suitability before confirming a steel installation—not every address will qualify.

Questions Homeowners Ask When Comparing Steel and Wood

Is a steel privacy fence cheaper than wood?

Not necessarily. Conventional wood often costs less upfront. The comparison is between the total installed scope and the future upkeep each homeowner expects to undertake.

Can I replace my existing wood fence with steel?

Frequently, yes, if the location, grade, access, layout, and local material rules allow it. Removal and new gate requirements need to be evaluated in the estimate.

Do you install both wood and steel fences?

No. DFW Steel Privacy specializes in one six-foot steel privacy fence system. We provide this comparison to help you decide whether our system belongs on your shortlist.
